My insane 4 year old – proud owner of the iPad2 after a 6 hour wait!

Yesterday saw the release of the beautiful iPad2 in the UK. As serious Apple fans and happy iPad owners, you can imagine that there was a little excitement in our house in the days leading up to the release.

As you would expect, we had conversations ‘ooh look what new things it can do’ etc, our 7 year old was extremely interested in what new features the iPad2 would have and our 4 year old – well, how do I describe that?

When we sold our original iPad a few days before the release of iPad2, we explained to the children that there would be a new one, blah blah blah. Our 4 year old daughter cried, and I mean really cried at the thought of losing her iPad for only a few days. Once we got over that little drama, each day she would ask, “how many sleeps till we get the new iPad2?”

When the release day finally arrived, she was up and dressed at the crack of dawn ready to go and join the queues at the Southampton West Quay Apple Store. We got there around 12 and were about 65 people from the front of the queue – some hardcore people had been there since 4am!!!!! We were assured that where we were positioned, we would be guaranteed the iPad2 of our choice (we got white!).

At 3pm, the Apple Store closed it doors, the shutters were down and the staff were heading out to eat – by this point there were an estimated 500 people waiting in the queue! At 4pm, the staff emerged, masses of them, buzzing with energy. Their was much clapping, cheering and chanting – we were a tad reserved but our 4 year old daughter was up on daddies shoulders hooting with the rest!

At 5pm, they started to let people in to the store, a small few at a time. Every one was cheered in and out of the store and the first purchaser was being interviewed and photographed by the media. We finally made it to the checkout a little before 6pm – 4 year old bowing to her adoring fans, demanding to be the one who opened the beautiful box ready for activation and the one that carried the iPad2 out of the store whilst being cheered once again.

So, has the world gone mad or is it just in this household?

Review: Digital Story Book, Far to the North HD iPad app by PicPocketBooks

Posted on February 13, 2011 by Leave a comment

Price: £1.79 from iTunesAuthor and Illustrator, Gina Ricci. The Far to the North HD kids iPad app is aimed at children from approx 2 years old. This digital story book tells the tale of the journey a polar bear takes throughout it’s life. The story has simple illustrations to support the rhyming tale which I think work very well. This app is a great source of education but at the same time is a lovely story with some very cute polar bears. Both of my children enjoyed this story app, we have read it 3 times now as a bedtime story and found that as well as being a calming influence – perfect for bedtime, it has also raised questions about the northern lights, polar bears etc from my children, it therefore achieved its goal in being educational without them even realising!

What do the kids think of the Far to the North HD App for iPad?

Child Review – Age 7 years: ” I liked this story. It is nice to see the polar bears growing up and enjoying being with their families just like us, I think that it is a nice story.!

Age 6; “I really loved because I’ve just been to Iceland”

Review: Humf app for iPhone & iPad by P2 games

Posted on February 12, 2011 by Leave a comment

Price: £1.79 from iTunes

The Humf kids iPad and iPhone app is aimed at children from approx 18 months old. Humf is a recognisable character that your children will love. The app boasts an extremely simple to use navigation system that will enable your child to play independently from around 2 years old.

Humf is a well loved character found on Nick Jnr in the UK and on various other childrens TV channels worldwide. With a lovely design and the familiar song playing in the background, your children are sure to love this app so much that they won’t even realise that they are learning!

The app has 9 games – 1. Make a fluffy friend, with a drag and drop and an arrow navigation your child can find hours of fun creating new characters and interchanging their features. 2. Colouring in, touch the colour and then the area that you would like to put it and you have a colourful scene from the show. 3. Tidy up, drag the coloured toys to the toybox of the same colour – great for fine motor skills as well as learning your colours. 4. Match the character to the shape of the shadow. 5. Blow up balloons with Humf and his friend, too little and they’ll blow away, too much and they will pop! 6. Follow numbered stars to do a traditional dot to dot picture. 7. Musical Stickerscene, drag in the characters to hear them play their musical instruments, you can then choose which instruments they play. 8. Shoot bubbles at the rubber ducks to stop them getting away – great for coordination skills. 9. Racing car, move the car up and down to avoid the building blocks and bump the toys to gain points.

I initially tested the app with my youngest daughter (4yrs) and my niece (2.5yrs) and they both loved it. The game was lots of fun, had enough variety to appeal to all levels of skill and had a lovely design. My 2 daughters (older one is 7yrs) have loved playing this game together again and again!

What do the kids think of the Humf App for iPad?

Child Review – Age 4 years: ” I love Humf, he’s really cute and my sister likes him too even though she is older! My cousin is little and she can play this game too though she sometimes gets things wrong but that’s ok. My favourite bit was the musical instruments!”
